The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reports that Bruce Pierce of Indianapolis suffered critical injuries in the shooting.
Pierce faces Level 1 felony charges of attempted rape, Level 4 felony of unlawful possession of a firearm, Level 5 felony of attempted child molestation, and Level 1 felony of confinement.
According to court documents, Pierce was found guilty of child molestation in 2016. He received an eight-year prison sentence.
An arrest warrant has been issued for him.
The shooting happened on May 24 at the Baymont Inn on Eagle View Drive on the northwest side of the city, according to court documents.
The 12-year-old victim claimed that in order to locate her mother, she went to the hotel with her great aunt. Pierce joined the victim’s mother at the hotel and escorted them to a Baymont Inn room.
The mother temporarily left the 12-year-old girl alone in the hotel room with Pierce while she carried some bags to a car, according to the court documents. When the mother came back, she discovered Pierce on top of the 12-year-old girl, ripping off her clothes.
Witnesses claim that during the alleged sexual assault, Pierce had a gun on him or close by. According to the victim, he tore off her tank top and pinned her arms to the bed.
After noticing Pierce on top of her daughter, the victim’s mother yelled at him, drew her own gun, and started shooting. The mother and daughter left the hotel after Pierce was hit by the gunfire.
On May 24, Pierce was admitted to the hospital and was said to be in critical condition. There has been no update on his health.
Following the ordeal, the 12-year-old victim was brought to Riley Hospital for a check-up, per the court documents.
Authorities told FOX59/CBS4 that Pierce is still in the hospital, despite early uncertainty regarding his present location. His warrant is still in effect.
